In Fiscal Year 2012, the SEC’s Office of the Whistleblower received 3,001 tips, with the most common allegations being Corporate Disclosures and Financials (18.2%), Offering Fraud (15.5%), and Market Manipulation (15.2%). On August 21, 2012, the SEC issued its first whistleblower award of $45,739.16, equal to 30% of $150,000 in monetary sanctions, to an individual whose information significantly accelerated an enforcement action and helped prevent additional harm. The award was paid from the Investor Protection Fund, which ended FY 2012 with a balance of $453.4 million, funded entirely by investment earnings, while the Office also processed 2,507 Wire Transfer Crime Reports and disbursed $69,727 to the Office of the Inspector General.

The most frequent allegations involved Corporate Disclosures and Financials (18.2%), Offering Fraud (15.5%), and Market Manipulation (15.2%), submitted via hotline, mail, fax, and online channels. On August 21, 2012, the SEC made its first-ever whistleblower award of $45,739.16—exactly 30% of $150,000 in sanctions—to an individual whose original information directly accelerated an enforcement action and helped prevent further fraud. The award was paid from the Investor Protection Fund, which ended FY 2012 with a balance of $453.4 million, having earned $757,248 in investment income during the year.
