narrative

William H. Donaldson, the 27th Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, announced on June 1, 2005, that he would step down effective June 30, 2005, after serving since 2003. He credited the SEC’s dedicated staff for making his tenure one of the most consequential in the agency’s history since its 1934 founding, particularly in rebuilding market integrity after the wave of corporate scandals that eroded public trust. Donaldson emphasized that while more work remained to strengthen corporate governance and financial markets, he believed it was time to return to private life. The announcement was made via a public press release and included no allegations of fraud, misconduct, or legal violations against him or any other individual. There are no dollar amounts, fines, charges, or enforcement actions referenced in the document. His departure was framed as a voluntary retirement, not a result of scandal or pressure. The SEC planned to webcast his final press conference, underscoring the transparency and institutional focus of his exit.

SEC CHAIRMAN WILLIAM H. DONALDSON TO STEP DOWN ON JUNE 30 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2005-82 Washington, D.C., June 1, 2005 - Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman William H. Donaldson today announced that he would step down on June 30, 2005. Chairman Donaldson is the 27th Chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and was appointed by President Bush in 2003. Chairman Donaldson offered the following remarks: When I assumed the Chairmanship of the Securities and Exchange Commission roughly two and one-half years ago, public confidence was severely undermined, reflecting the corporate and financial scandals that had shaken the nation. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the many professionals who serve at the SEC, this period has represented an extraordinarily active and effective time for the Agency. It may well be remembered as the most consequential and productive period in the Commission's history since its founding in 1934. I have been honored to serve as Chairman. Although there will always be more work to be done to preserve and enhance the integrity and strength of our nation's corporations and markets, I believe the time has come for me to step down and return to the private sector and my family. PRESS CONFERENCE PLANNED FOR 4:00 P.M. TODAY Chairman Donaldson will conduct a press conference at 4:00 p.m., E.D.T., June 1, 2005. The Commission plans to provide a webcast accessible at www.sec.gov. http://www.sec.gov/news/press/2005-82.htm Home | Previous Page Modified: 06/1/2005
